Cuckoo(n) // (2016)
video projection, sound, cotton fabric
A piece about anxiety, self-consumption and metamorphisis.
A friend recently told me that my energy is so deep and penetrating, that even someone who doesn't look for it can feel it and the absence of verbal language has caused one to misinterpret it as "intimidating or disinterested" This struck a chord in me because they were able to so perfectly verbalize what had only been a small premonition cascading around in my mind for years.
I receive gratuitous amounts of energy from people on a daily basis. Most of the time, this energy is transmitted through eye contact and the absence of verbal language. These fervent energies cause a reaction in me to withdraw from people with uncertainty, so I erect a wall to quell my inner being from any emotional dis-alignment and end up displacing myself. This chain reaction has caused me to miss out on many opportunities in terms of meeting new people, having new experiences and worst of all, expressing myself fully without any foreign energetic hinderances.
Secondly, this piece is also about the dangers of being TOO present, and the situational burdances of being an empath in todays' world. Being self-aware itself is a wonderful thing and can bring one to many different realizations about oneself and the outside world. But, there can also be an inverse, harmful side where you start to inadvertently inhabit people's negative energy instead of your own. This can cause one to feel crazy or all of a sudden be consumed by your own negative thoughts. Finding the balance between, is crucial for one's preservation of self. I am still searching.
Participants were asked to inhabit the space for as long as they'd like and exit whenever they felt ready. Some stayed the duration of the piece, while others exited more quickly.
